Pieces

This was an excerpt from a book that was on a list of the 10 best books for grieving. It was weird-I've read a lot of books on grieving, but I only read one on the list and never even heard of the other ones. I might have to take a look at some of them.

From "A Prayer for Owen Meaning," by John Irving

When someone you loves dies, and you're not expecting it, you don't lost (him) all at once; you lose (him) in pieces over a long time - the way the mail stops coming, (his) scent fades from the pillows, and even from the clothes in (his) closet and drawers. Gradually, you accumulate the parts of (him) that are gone. Just when the day comes - when there is a particular missing part that overwhelms you with the feeling that (he's) gone forever - there comes another day, and another specifically missing part.
