When you research the history of which people have been declared "mentally ill", you find that they are largely people who refused to shut up about injustice, not the people causing that injustice.
-Lundy Bancroft
I started this blog soon after the death of my beautiful 17-year-old son, Hayden, as a way to deal with my grief. I titled it "Dear Hayden" because at first I wrote as if I was writing to him. My use of the word "dear" ended up being twofold: "used as an affectionate or friendly form of address" and "regarded with deep affection; cherished by someone." Many posts are saved quotes, song lyrics, Bible verses, poems, etc. with credit given to the actual authors as much as possible. Enjoy~

A miracle
There are only two ways to live your life.
One as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as though everything is a miracle. -Albert Einstein
One as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as though everything is a miracle. -Albert Einstein
Didn't do
I don't regret the things I've done. I regret the things I didn't do when I had the chance.
Funny quotes
Here are a bunch of funny quotes I found I had written down:
When my boss said, "You've been late for the fifth time!", I thought to myself, "Yay, it's Friday."
Inside me is a skinny person screaming to get out. But she shuts up when I eat cake.
A mother's menu consists of two choices - take it or leave it.
True laziness is getting excited when plans get canceled.
If someone says, "no offense," he/she is about to say something offensive.
Duct tape is like the force. It has a dark side, a light side, and keeps the universe together.
Life is hard. It's even harder when you're stupid. -John Wayne
Adults are just kids with money.
Never go to bed angry. Stay up and fight. -Phyllis Diller
Life is like a hot bath. It feels good when you're in it, but the longer you stay in, the more wrinkled you get.

In life we all have
an unspeakable secret,
an irreversible regret,
an unreachable dream,
and an unforgettable love.
an unspeakable secret,
an irreversible regret,
an unreachable dream,
and an unforgettable love.
Already here
Live for today and not tomorrow
Live for the now and what's here
Stop living for what may be or what may never come
Live for the day already here.
Knock
Opportunity may only knock once in a lifetime, but temptation always has its finger on the doorbell.
Life in your years
Another quote from Abe Lincoln
And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
Courage
Courage is not having the strength to go on; it's going on when you don't have the strength.
The shore
by Christopher Columbus
You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.
You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.
What they live
Children Learn What They Live
If children live with...
criticism, they learn to condemn.
hostility, they learn to fight.
ridicule, they learn to be shy.
shame, they learn to feel guilty.
tolerance, they learn to be patient.
encouragement, they learn confidence.
praise, they learn to appreciate.
fairness, they learn justice.
security, they learn to have faith.
approval, they learn to like themselves.
acceptance and friendship, they learn to find love in the world.
Hibernating
by Anais Nin
You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world, and you believe you are living. Then you read a book, take a trip, and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating. The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness. The second symptom (when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all. It appears like an innocuous illness. Monotony, boredom, death. Millions live like this (or die like this) without knowing it. They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children. And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death. Some never awaken.

Two wolves
An old Cherokee told his grandson: "My son, there's a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is EVIL. It's anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego. The other is GOOD. It's joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness and truth." The boy thought about it and asked: "Which wolf wins?" The old man quietly replied: "The one you feed."

From Heaven
I remember cutting this out soon after my grandma died.
Merry Christmas From Heaven
I still hear the songs,
I still see the lights
I still feel your love on cold wintery nights
I still share your hopes and all of your cares
I'll even remind you to please say your prayers
I just want to tell you, you still make me proud
You stand head and shoulders above all the crowd
Keep trying each moment, to stay in His grace
I came here before you to help set your place
You don't have to be perfect all of the time
He forgives you the slip, if you continue the climb
To my family and friends,
please be thankful today
I'm still close to you,
in a new special way
I love you all dearly,
Now don't shed a tear
'Cause I'm spending my
Christmas with Jesus this year
Give up
Sometimes you have to give up on people.
Not because you don't care, but because they don't.

Why are you crying, Mom?
"Why are you crying?" he asked his mom. "Because I'm a woman," she told him. "I don't understand," he said. His mom just hugged him and said, "And you never will..."
Later the little boy asked his father, "Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?" "All women cry for no reason," was all his dad could say.
The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.
Finally he put in a call to God. When God got on the phone, the man said, "God, why do women cry so easily?" and God said...
When I made a woman, she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort.
I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children.
I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.
I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly.
This same sensitivity helps her to make a child's boo-boo feel better and shares in her teenager's anxieties and fears.
I gave her the strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart.
I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand by him unfalteringly.
I gave her tears to shed. They are hers to use whenever she needs them. They are her secret strength. They make her more like ME...

All the children
Came across a lot of handwritten quotes when going through old papers. Here's one of many.
Are All the Children In?
by Alice Pearson, Heartspun and Homespun Poems
(recorded at the end of Dr. Dobson's book, Dare to Discipline)
I think of times as night draws nigh,
Of an old house on the hill,
And of a yard all wide
And blossom-starred
Where the children played at will.
And when the night at last came down
Hushing the merry din,
Mother would look around and ask,
"Are all the children in?"
Oh, it's many and many a year since then,
And the old house on the hill
No longer echoes to childish feet,
And the yard is still, so still.
But I see it all as the shadows creep,
And though many the years have been since then,
I can hear mother ask,
"Are all the children in?"
I wonder if when the shadows fall
On the last short earthly day;
When we say goodbye to the world outside
All tired with our childish play;
When we step out into the other land
Where mother so long has been,
Will we hear her ask,
Just as of old,
"Are all the children in?"

Still falling
from a tag on a necklace from Bryan Anthonys
Still Falling For You
There are a lot of uncertainties in life, but one thing that I am certain of is you and me. If nothing else, I hope you know that I choose you, and I will choose you every single day. Although time has passed - I still fall for you each and every moment. I fall for you when you surprise me with morning coffee. I fall for you when you dance silly in the kitchen. I fall for you when you are my voice of reason. I fall for you when you push me to try something new. I fall for you when you inspire me to be a better person. I fall for the way you love, for the way you live, for the person you are. Thank you for choosing me. Thank you for filling my life with adventure, wonder, and happiness. I hope you know that I adore you without limits and as long as we are together, I will fall over and over.

Healed
posted by Michelle D., Sam's mom
by Kitty O'Meara
And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.
And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.
And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.

I feel as if I'm

from 3 am Thoughts
You're rare, so people are gonna fall in love with the idea of having you, but most of them aren't used to rare, they're foreign to it, so they'll lack the capacity to treat you as such. And that's where they lose you.

The End
by R.M. Drake
Tragedies will always be found in the things we love. And if we are not willing to see the beauty in losing something that means the world to us, then imagine how terrible it will be to live for them.
We must always welcome the end of all things. For sometimes, knowing nothing lasts forever, is the only way we can learn to fall in love with all the moments and all the people that are meant to take our breath away.

Absurd
from Flying Free
by Elle Renee
LEGAL COUNSEL:
"Your Honor, I'd like to submit evidence that Person 1 has willfully violated, intimidated, neglected, manipulated, dismissed, assaulted, ignored, falsely accused, minimized, smeared, undermined, punished and inflicted emotional, physical, spiritual and bodily harm to Person 2 against his/her will. All this has been done in the presence of Person 2's children, as well. Person 1 has been warned and admonished repeatedly, yet to no avail. Petitioning for Safety and Separation on behalf of Person 2's sake."
JUDGE:
(Proverbs)
A fool's speech is slanderous. (10:18)
The fool is quarrelsome, and (s)he stirs up dissension and anger. (20:3)
A fool's lips bring strife, And his/her mouth calls for blows. (18:6)
The fool is dangerous and harmful and we should avoid him/her like a bear robbed of her cubs. (17:12)
Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words. (23:9)
Drive out the scoffer, and contention will go out, Even strife and dishonor will cease. (22:10)
A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the back of fools. (14:7)
Leave the presence of the fool. (14:7)
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. (Psalm 9:9
LEGAL COUNSEL:

JUDGE:
"Never mind, none of this wisdom applies anymore. Tell Person 2 to return home, give thanks, pray harder, have faith, and suffer for the gospel. This case is adjourned."
Absurd? Yes, it is. Happens every day? Yes, it does.
"Cling to wisdom - she will protect you. Love her - she will guard you.
Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do! And with your wisdom, develop common sense and good judgment. If you exalt wisdom, she will exalt you. Hold her fast, and she will lead you with great honor; she will place a beautiful crown upon your head." Proverbs 4:6-9
Actual Proverbs 4:6-9:
Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;
Love her, and she will keep you.

Love Him

When obedience to God contradicts what I think will give me pleasure,
let me ask myself if I love Him.
When obedience to God contradicts what I think will give me pleasure,
let me ask myself if I love Him.
The same person
It's kinda hard to believe that the person living my life 10 years ago is the same person that's living my life today. When someone tells me that "people don't change", I just look at them, say nothing, and smile because I have my own personal experience to prove them wrong.
