from 3 am Thoughts
You don't always have to tell your side of the story.
Time will.
I started this blog soon after the death of my beautiful 17-year-old son, Hayden, as a way to deal with my grief. I titled it "Dear Hayden" because at first I wrote as if I was writing to him. My use of the word "dear" ended up being twofold: "used as an affectionate or friendly form of address" and "regarded with deep affection; cherished by someone." Many posts are saved quotes, song lyrics, Bible verses, poems, etc. with credit given to the actual authors as much as possible. Enjoy~

Communicate
by Sylvester McNutt III
If I did something wrong,
communicate.
If I hurt your feelings, make me
aware of it. If I didn't listen well enough,
tell me again in a way I'll understand. If I'm
insensitive to your needs, to your desires,
or to your thoughts, tell me so I can
consider them.
However, don't ever hold an attitude with
me because you haven't clearly expressed
yourself.
I'm a human, not a mind reader.

Changes you
by Megan Devine, It's OK That You're Not OK
We often think of grief as primarily emotional,
but grief is a full-body, full-mind experience.
Grief affects appetite, digestion, blood pressure,
heart rate, respiration, muscle fatigue, and sleep -
basically everything. If it's in the body, grief
affects it.
In addition to physical effects, cognitive
changes, memory loss, confusion, and shortened
attention spans are all common in early grief.
Some effects even last for years - and that's
perfectly normal.
It's true on so many levels: losing somone
changes you.

Temporary emotion
from 3 am Thoughts
Until men and women start having honest conversations about who they truly are, what demons they battle with, where they lack, where they come from, and what they truly want...love will continue to be a temporary emotion. Honesty and communication are key.

Rending and mending
by Deborah Spungen
Time can lessen the hurt; the empty place we have can seem smaller as other things and experiences fill our life; we can forget for periods and feel as if our loved one didn't die; we can find sense in the death and understand that perhaps this death does fit into a bigger design in the world; we can learn to remember the good and hold onto that.
But we cannot "get over it," because the to get over it would mean we were not changed by the experience. It would mean we did not grow by the experience. It would mean that our loved one's death made no difference in our life.
There is an interesting discussion in the Talmus, an ancient Jewish writing. Those Jews had the custom of rending their garments - literally tearing their clothes - to symbolize the ripping apart that death brings. But the question was raised, after the period of mourning, could you sew the garment up and use it again? The teachers answered yes, but when you mended it, you should not tuck the edges under so it would look as if it had never been torn. This symbolized the fact that life after grief is not the same as before. The rent will show. The next question was, can you sell the garment? The teachers answered no. The rending and mending of our life is ours and others cannot wear it.

40 years old
from #Fabulous Forties
originally by Andy Rooney
I am 40 years old.
In case you missed it on 60 minutes, this is what Andy Rooney thinks about women near or over 40:
"As I grow in age, I value women near or over 40 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why:
A women near or over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, "What are you thinking?" She doesn't care what you think.
If a woman near or over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually more interesting.
Women near or over 40 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it.
Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated.
Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman near or over 40.
Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a women near or over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.
Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk, if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.
Yes, we praise women near or over 40 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman near or over 40, there is a bald, paunchy relic making a fool of himself with some 22-year-old waitress. Ladies, I apologize."

- For every woman unhappy with her stretch marks is another woman who wishes she had them.
- You should definitely have more confidence. And if you saw yourself the way others see you, you would.
- Don't look for a man to save you. Be able to save yourself.
- It's okay not to love every part of your body...but you should.
- We all have that one friend who seems to have it all together. That woman with the seemingly perfect life. Well, you might be that woman to someone else.
- You should be a priority. Not an option, a last resort, or a backup plan.
- You're a woman. That alone makes you pretty damn remarkable.

Nothing can separate
Bible Gateway Verse of the Day
Romans 8:38-39
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

A Difficult Day
by A.A. Milne
"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh.
"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."
"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.
"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.
"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right.

"Boring"
from 3 am Thoughts
(Adjusted the swear words)
Every relationship will get "boring" after you've been together for years. Love isn't a feeling, it's a commitment to love every day, physically and emotionally. It's difficult. It's not always laughs, smiles, and fun. People tend to quit when it stops being fun and they go look for someone else because "the spark is gone." No, that's not how it works. You want somebody to never give up on you, and love you unconditionally and you do the same. Be the change. This isn't Hollywood, this isn't the movies. That sxxx isn't real. Love someone when you don't want to, when they aren't the easiest to deal with, when they're hard to love. That's the realest sxxx there is.

I've learned
by Daniell Koepke
If I've learned anything from this life, it's that sometimes the darkest times can bring us to the brightest places. I've learned that the most toxic people can teach us the most important lessons, that our most powerful struggles can grant us the most necessary growth, and that the most heartbreaking losses of friendship and love can make room for the most wonderful people. I've learned that what seems like a curse in the moment can actually be a blessing, and that what seems like the end of the road is actually just the discovery that we are meant to travel down a different path. I've learned that no matter how difficult things seem, there is always hope. And I've learned that no matter how powerless we feel or how horrible things seem, we can't give up. We have to keep going. Even when it's scary, even when all our strength seems gone, we have to keep picking ourselves back up and move forward, because whatever we're battling in the moment, it will pass, and we will make it through. We've made it this far. We can make it through whatever comes next.

Living in peace
from Flying Free
from The Life-Saving Divorce by Gretchen Baskerville
The Bible says there will be people who are in the church - even church leaders - who do wrong and just won't change.
from The Life-Saving Divorce by Gretchen Baskerville
The Bible says there will be people who are in the church - even church leaders - who do wrong and just won't change.
But actually, I wrote you not to associate with anyone who
claims to be a brother or sister and is sexually immoral or
greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard or a
swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
-1 Corinthians 5:11
But sometimes your friends or pastor will insist that you ignore your God-given instincts and give it another chance. This is not biblical. Jesus called his followers to forgive, but he doesn't call them to trust again or to reconcile unilaterally.
The Bible instructs us to look for "fruits of repentance" - evidence of sustained change over time, not just sporadic fits of remorse with more abuse in between. Paul says we are to live in peace with everyone, "as far as it depends on you" (Romans 12:18). He's saying the other person may never become a good, trustworthy person. In the end, some people feel entitled to continue in their destructive ways. This makes it impossible to live in peace with them. To live in peace, you need to get away.
Being a Christian doesn't mean that you entrust your safety and peace of mind to a person who has a pattern of hurting you. In fact, Scripture tells us to get away from angry, destructive people.
Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person;
do not associate with one easily angered...
-Proverbs 22:24
The Apostle Paul warns his fellow Christians about those who pick fights and cause hurt and division. Paul says, "Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them" (Titus 3:9-10). Living in peace is important to God.

Life measured by moments
From a post that Susan B. shared-excerpts
from Acts of Random Kindness
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away."
Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's 100% true:
from Acts of Random Kindness
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away."
Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's 100% true:
- At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.
- A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.
- Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.
- You mean the world to someone.
- If not for you, someone may not be living.
- You are special and unique.
- Have trust-sooner or later you will get what you wish for or something better.
- When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good can still come from it.
- When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a hard look: you most likely turned your back on the world and the people who love and care for you.
- Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.
- Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.
- Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know and you'll both be happy.
- If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know they are great.

Bible Gateway Verse of the Day
2 Thessalonians 1:3
God's Final Judgment and Glory
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting because your faith grows exceedingly and the love of every one of you abounds toward each other.

The greatest gift
For the longest time I had a hard time understanding this passage, but now I do...
Bible Gateway Verse of the Day
1 Corinthians 13:1-3
The Greatest Gift
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

Sovereign Savior
Bible Gateway Verse of the Day
Psalm 18:1-2
God the Sovereign Savior. To The Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said:
I will love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

The overthinker
Trust the overthinker who tells you they love you.
They have, most assuredly, thought of every reason not to.
They have, most assuredly, thought of every reason not to.
If you love her
If you love her
Never fill her ears with lies, her mouth with words, her eyes with tears, her mind with confusion, or her heart with pain.
Never fill her ears with lies, her mouth with words, her eyes with tears, her mind with confusion, or her heart with pain.
Everything you want
It's hard to wait around for something you know might never happen;
but it's harder to give up when you know it's everything you want.

Good to yourself
Ladies,
There are bigger goals in life than being a good woman to a man.
Be a good woman to yourself.
There are bigger goals in life than being a good woman to a man.
Be a good woman to yourself.
Walk away
A strong woman will automatically stop trying if she feels unwanted. She won't fix it or beg, she'll just walk away.
One minute
Very encouraging
One minute after a believer dies:
One minute after a believer dies:
- Angels usher your soul to Heaven (Luke 16:22)
- You immediately enter God's presence (2 Corinthians 5:6-8)
- You are conscious, in command of your thinking, feeling, speech, and memories (Luke 16:19-31)
- You participate in magnificent worship with angels and believers before the throne of God and Christ (Revelation 4-5)
- You are aware to some degree of activities and events on Earth (Revelation 6:9-10)
- You will recognize and communicate with believers who preceded you to Heaven (Luke 9:28-36)
Verse look-up:
Luke 16:22: So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
2 Corinthians 5:6-8: So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
Luke 16:19-31
The Rich Man and Lazarus
There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was full of sores, who was laid at the gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and
licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Then he cried and said, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." But Abraham said, "Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and like Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us."
Then he said, "I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment." Abraham said to him, "They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them." And he said, "No, father Abraham, but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent." But he said to him, "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded through one rise from the dead."
Revelation 4-5
The Throne Room of Heaven
After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, "Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this."
Immediately, I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in the front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do no rest day or night, saying:
"Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!"
Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:
"You are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created."
The Lamb Takes the Scroll
And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?" And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.
So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals."
And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.
Worthy Is the Lamb
Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying:
"You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For you were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth."
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice
"Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!"
And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:
"Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!"
Then the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.
Revelation 6:9-10
Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"
Luke 9:28-36
Jesus Transfigured on the Mount
Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were with Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him. Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah - not knowing what he said.
While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!" When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. But they kept quiet, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen.
