SOMEONE ASKED A RELATIONSHIP THERAPIST:
"WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHEAT ON A PERSON
THEY CLAIM TO LOVE?"
THE THERAPIST PAUSED AND SAID:
1. "Because loving someone and being emotionally mature are two different things."
Someone can genuinely love you and still lack thediscipline, boundaries, or self-awareness required
to protect the relationship. Feelings don't automatically create character.
2. "Because they wanted validation, not another relationship."
Sometimes, cheating isn't about finding someone "better." It's about chasing the temporary feeling of being desired, attractive, powerful, or important again.
3. "Because they confused temptation with a reason to act."
Attraction to another person can happen in a committed relationship. The revealing part isn't noticing the temptation, it's deciding that the temptation deserves action.
4. "Because they wanted to escape themselves."
An affair can become an emotional hiding place from insecurity, boredom, aging, dissatisfaction, or problems they refuse to confront. The other person becomes an escape from their own life.
5. "Because resentment was never addressed."
Some people don't communicate when they feel neglected, angry, or unappreciated. They silently build resentment until attention from someone else feels like emotional revenge or relief.
6. "Because they believed they could have both."
They wanted the security of their relationship and the excitement of something new. Instead of making a difficult choice, they tried to keep both worlds and usually created damage in both.
7. "Because being loved doesn't mean they know how to receive love."
Someone can be deeply loved and still sabotage intimacy because closeness makes them uncomfortable. Sometimes the healthier the relationship becomes, the more exposed their insecurities feel.
8. "Because they were chasing the beginning, not the person."
New attention comes with dopamine, mystery, flirting, and fantasy. Someone who mistakes novelty for love may keep chasing that feeling whenever the reality of a long-term relationship becomes ordinary.
9. "Because they never learned that dissatisfaction requires a conversation."
A healthy person says, "Something is missing. We need to work on this." An avoidant person may say nothing, seek fulfillment elsewhere, and only explain the problem after getting caught.
10. "Because cheating can be a character decision, not a love decision."
A person may love their partner and still make a selfish, destructive choice. Love can explain why they stayed but it does not automatically excuse what they did.
