I tend to look into the future a lot. I have a lot of dreams. For many people dreams are the only things they have to hold on to. As for right now, I'm just living my life as it goes. I try not to worry about a lot of things but sometimes I can't help but do just that. I'm sure everyone can relate to that. I currently play water polo and have been since my sophomore year. When I started I would basically sit on the bench throughout entire JV games, I wasn't anything special. I was probably the slowest swimmer on the team and I didn't have a lot of knowledge about the game. After the season ended I joined the dive team and ended up getting my varsity letter, but I didn't stick with it. At that point I decided to shift my focus completely on water polo, and I'm grateful I did. I played during the spring and summer off-season and by the time I was a junior I started on varsity. I continued to improve throughout the season, then at the banquet I was chosen to be one of the captains. I played again in the off-season, this time during winter, spring, and summer, and here I am. Continuing to better myself and make an effort to improve every day, trying to make the best of my last year.
I have a lot of interests outside of water polo and my main goal for the future pertains to those interests. I'm really big into film; I love movies, I enjoy screenwriting, and I make my own short films as well. My dream in life is to make it in film. I want to fly to Los Angeles, leave my life here behind and start with a clean slate. My friend and I currently have two screenplays in the process and we're close to being done. In the springtime we plan on entering them into screenwriting competitions with hopes of getting recognized in the process. I've talked to people who are in film and associated with it and they've all told me the same thing; networking. The most important thing you can do it to get yourself noticed and to get jobs is getting to know people. My friend and I met with a guy who has been a cameraman for television shows and edits a lot of big productions. He gave us lots of tips, one of the biggest focuses being networking. Similar to the other weekend when the same friend and I went to a Thirty Seconds to Mars concert; we were in line, waiting to get our CD's signed by the band, when a member of the band's work crew came up to us and asked if we could meet him by a white tent to be interviewed. After we went through the line we met him at the tent where he took us backstage for the interview. The reason for this was because they are coming out with a concert documentary soon and this is what the band does; they interview fans about their lives and how it's affected by music, family, and more. One of the questions my friend was asked was what his dream was, which is about the same as mine. Afterwards the cameraman talked to him and said to make sure he gets to know people and again, networks himself and makes connections wherever he can. One of the biggest reasons I want to move to LA is for that; to make a name for myself. When I was younger I never had dreams of being anything big, anything special. I just wanted to be a normal guy with a 9-5 and pay the bills, but that isn't enough for me anymore. I want more in life than just a boring office job, sitting at a desk and filing papers all day. I would feel like I'm sitting there while my life is passing me by and I can't do anything about it because it's too late. So I'm not going to let it be too late. It's important to have high goals in life because you'll go to great lengths to achieve them, and if you love it enough you won't give up. You'll push yourself to be better in hopes of eventually reaching that goal, and if you never get there, at least you tried. If it ends up that I don't become a screenwriter or a director I won't be upset, I'll be happy that I lived a life loving what I do, and that is film. My dream is a big defining factor for me, and I will work hard to make that dream a reality.
(The last part of the assignment was that they had to tweet a 1-160 character version of their definition to the group)
